Unveiled: The New Nikon D3300 DSLR, a Fast Nikon Prime Lens, Five Point-and-Shoot Digital Cameras

It certainly is the time of the sea(CES)son, and Nikon has brought forth a wealth of cameras and lenses bound to intrigue a wide-range of shooters. For starters, the D3300 DSLR has been announced, with a new 18-55mm kit lens—and a new 35mm f/1.8 prime lens has also been released. For good measure, five distinct point-and-shoot cameras have also been announced, including a new flagship long zoom.

35mm f/1.8 Lens

To start, a very interesting new lens for full-frame FX cameras has been announced. The AF-S FX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED lens becomes part of a quartet of fast-aperture prime lenses designed to get optimal image quality from large-sensor Nikon DSLRs. Its f/1.8 maximum aperture and 35mm focal length are ideal for low-light situations and for controlling shallow depth of field. With ED and aspherical lens elements, aberrations and distortion are minimized and high contrast, sharp imaging is the result. Super Integrated Coatings (SIC) enhance contrast and color and nearly eliminate ghosting, even in backlit scenes. Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor is supported for fast, quiet, and precise autofocus action. Its wide aperture and silent focus make this lens perfect for recording HD video. When used on Nikon DX format DSLRs, such as the new D3300, the equivalent focal length is 52.5mm.

D3300 DSLR

The Nikon D3300 DSLR is the fourth generation in the D3000 series and offers a handful of performance upgrades for this popular entry-level F-mount DSLR camera. With a 24.2MP DX format CMOS sensor and the new EXPEED 4 image processor, the D3300 creates beautiful, vibrant photographs and full HD 1080p videos. Following in the wake of the D800E, the sensor on the D3300 omits the anti-aliasing properties of the traditional optical low-pass filter in order to provide the utmost sharpness and resolution. The new image processor brings with it improved low-light imaging with an expanded ISO reach to 25600 and faster performance speeds, including 5 fps continuous shooting speed. In addition, it has bettered one of the D3200's best qualities—its size. The form factor of the D3300 is slightly more compact and it weighs less as well. This is noteworthy for a camera series that is renowned for providing maximum image quality in a minimal package.

With an 11-point autofocus system, the D3300 provides responsive and accurate autofocus and exposure can be controlled manually or in a fully automatic mode. Shooting scenes enable you to select auto settings that match the type of shot you are taking, including portrait, landscape, and even sports and night portrait for tricky low-light capture. In addition, a built-in flash is available, as is a hot-shoe mount for more powerful speedlights and other accessory attachments. A 3.0” 921k-dot LCD facilitates live view image composition and playback, including clear rendition of HD video. An HDMI interface enables direct screening of your movies on an HDTV.

Full HD 1080p video is supported in 60, 30, and 24 fps rates and a 3.5mm jack for an external microphone is provided in addition to the built-in monaural microphone. With the optional WU-1a Wireless Adapter, photos and videos can be easily transferred to your smartphone or tablet for sharing and your smart device can also be used as a remote viewer and control for the camera.

Not only is the D3300 compact, but its design enables it to fit comfortably in the hand and it provides easy access to all dials and buttons for efficient, intuitive control.

The D3300 is available in black, red, or gray as a kit with the new AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II lens. Like the D3300, this new 18-55mm lens is compact and lightweight. Thanks to a new retractable barrel design, the lens is 25% smaller and lighter than its predecessor. As a lens designed for the DX format, its focal range is equivalent to 27-82.5mm, which gives it a versatile “all-around” usefulness from wide-angle to short-telephoto lengths. It also boasts second-generation Vibration Reduction image stabilization technology, which enables up to four stops of compensation against blur caused by camera shake. Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating (SIC) is applied to the lens elements to reduce reflections and glare and help provide impressive colors and contrast.

COOLPIX L830 Digital Camera

Coming in at the top of Nikon’s long zoom point-and-shoot series, the new COOLPIX L830 Digital Camera provides a 34x optical zoom lens with a 35mm focal length equivalent of 22.5-765mm. This is an impressive focal range, encompassing a very wide 22.5mm wide-angle end extending to ultra telephoto for drawing distant subjects in for their close-ups. A Dynamic Fine Zoom Digital zoom doubles the focal range for incredible reach if needed and Hybrid Vibration reduction compensates against camera shake to provide clear images even when shooting at such long focal lengths and in dim light.

It houses a 16MP 1/2.3”CMOS sensor with a contrast-detect autofocus system for sharp color-accurate imaging and supports full HD 1080 30p/60i video capture. A built-in microphone records audio and an HDMI output means you can screen your images directly on an HDTV. A 3.0” 921k-dot tiltable TFT color LCD monitor with anti-reflection coating and 6-level brightness adjustment enables clear image composition and playback. A large, ergonomic grip, accessible buttons and dials, built-in flash, and an intuitive interface make this powerful zoom lens camera easy to operate. It is available in black or red and, like each of the below COOLPIX cameras, utilizes SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards for image storage.

COOLPIX S6800 Digital Camera

The COOLPIX S6800 Digital Camera is available in black, red, or white and is an ultra-slim digital camera with big camera specs. A 16MP 1/2.3” CMOS sensor enables high-resolution imaging and full HD 1080 30p/60i video capture. Low-light performance is impressive, with sensitivity ranging to ISO 6400, and a built-in flash is supported for extra light when needed. A 12x optical zoom lens provides the 35mm focal length equivalence of 25-300mm and, with Target Finding AF, the camera quickly finds focus on the correct subject. Lens-shift Vibration Reduction minimizes blurring in still imaging and combines with Electronic VR for blur reduction during video capture. A 3.0” 460k-dot LCD is provided for live view monitoring and playback. Eighteen scene modes and Scene Auto Selector optimize the camera’s settings to capture the best possible image.

Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables instant transfer of photos and videos to your compatible smartphone or tablet. You can even use your smart device as a remote control for operating the camera.

COOLPIX S5300 Digital Camera

With the same 16MP 1/2.3” CMOS sensor, ISO range, and video specs, the COOLPIX S5300 is a similar camera to the S6800. Where it differs is in the lens and in its form factor. The lens on the S5300 is an 8x NIKKOR lens with the 35mm equivalence of 25-200mm. It, too, offers Vibration Reduction technology for effective low-light capture, has a bright 3.0” LCD monitor, and a built-in flash. The Smart Portrait System makes taking pictures of people simple. It combines several face-friendly modes, including Face Priority AF and Skin Softening to optimize your “people pictures.” And with built-in Wi-Fi, you can easily share those shots with friends and family by a simple transfer to your smart device. The S5300 is slightly slimmer than the S6800 and is available only in a plum color.

COOLPIX S3600 Digital Camera

The COOLPIX S3600 Digital Camera is also a very slim point-and-shoot available in black, blue, pink, or silver. It features a 20.1MP 1/2.3” CCD sensor and an 8x optical zoom lens with a 35mm focal length equivalence of 25-200mm. With lens-shift Vibration Reduction, it is well-suited to use in low-light conditions and minimizes the appearance of blur throughout the zoom range. Video is supported in the HD 720/30p format and a 2.7” LCD enables clear composition and image review. The S3600 is filled with assistive features to making shooting as easy as possible. Eighteen scene modes let you get the shot you want by matching it to in-camera preset settings and the Smart Portrait System gets shots of friends and family right the first time, while Target Finding AF locks on to your subject for fast focus.

COOLPIX L30 Digital Camera

A very efficient, lightweight compact camera, the COOLPIX L30 is available in red only, but is as dynamic as its color. A 20.1MP 1/2.3” CCD sensor and a 5x optical zoom lens with a 35mm focal length equivalence of 26-130mm enables you to capture the shots you want. Autofocus is quick with contrast-detect AF and electronic Vibration Reduction minimizes blur in both stills and HD 720/30p video. A dedicated movie button allows for one-touch instant switch to video capture and a 3.0” LCD monitor offers clear playback and composition. Assistive features such as Auto mode, Scene modes, Smart Portrait System, and a built-in flash let you focus on the composition while the camera makes the proper settings.
